Akita Kanto Asakusa Festival (May 31 - June 1, 2025)
The Akita Kanto is a festival from Akita Prefecture in Northern Japan. Traditionally done to ensure a good harvest, it’s a parade of lanterns dangling from enormous poles carried by celebrants. Luckily, you can join in without leaving Tokyo at the Akita Kanto Asakusa Festival.

Yokohama Dragon Boat Race (May 31 - June 1, 2025)
In Yokohama, dragon boat racing takes center stage along the waterfront of Yamashita Park, where colorful dragon boats cut through the waves to the beat of pounding drums. For spectators, there will be food, cold beer, and performances by brass bands and other musical acts on the stage.

Fussa Firefly Festival (May 16-25, 2025)
This is the 60th year of this hotaru festival, where 500 fireflies are released into Hotaru Park on the banks of the Tamagawa. As well as the shiny little bugs, there are also street stalls and food kiosks, and also various stage performances.

Flowering at Hitachi Seaside Park (April 1 - June 1, 2025)
It’s rare to see a blue flower — let alone a whole field of them. But that’s the main attraction at Hitachi Seaside Park’s annual spring event, Flowering. Pro tip: There’s an easier way of getting to Hitachi Seaside Park — an organized tour. This easy day trip visits Hitachi Seaside Park and either Ashikaga Flower Park or Mito Kairakuen and includes travel to and from Tokyo as well as lunch.
